History

The Wellspring was Founded in 1991. It started as a "mission" by Father Botter, a priest at St Josephs Church, to help care for the homeless. It started opening for just one day per week and on the first day volunteers went out to find people who were in need. Demand increased and The Wellspring continued to develop.

Now

Twenty Five years on The Wellspring is now a bespoke designed larger facility at Harvey Street in Stockport. The Wellspring opens every day of the year and continues to offer a warm, secure and friendly environment to those in need. All meals are free, nutritious and include soup, sandwiches, dessert, tea/coffee and biscuits and a hot meal in the evening. Members are also able to obtain medical advice, and help with housing and employment concerns.

People become homeless or in need for a variety of reasons. The biggest percentage have been the result of a family dispute or marriage breakdown. Some have been in the care system, have been in the forces or suffer from drug or alcohol addiction. The visitors to The Wellspring come from a wide area around Stockport. Some sleep on the streets, some have tents, some sleep on their friends floors. All of these people benefit from the additional support and care The Wellspring provides.

The Wellspring don't receive any funding from the Council or government. Events are organised to promote The Wellspring and raise essential funds to continue to run the center. The Wellsprings costs are around £400 per day. The Wellspring depend on the kindness and generosity of others and their 150 volunteers who dedicate their time to The Wellspring. Without these people The Wellspring would not survive. The Wellspring were very proud to receive the Queens award for voluntary service in 2014. This is the highest award that can be awarded to volunteer groups across the UK.
